New to matched betting?
My Matched Betting Academy is the best place to get started. Learning the fundamentals takes 10-15 minutes and you’ll make £15 in the process.

I’m still trying to work out how you guys actually play this. Looking at Curragh at 14:00 I assume it’s Betsey Trotter that you would be looking at. Odds right now don’t give you anything, so do you place your back bet now and hope odds shorten just before the off, or wait to see what happens closer to the off before placing the back bet?
I have looked at these a few times before but just not sure how to play them. Always seems a bit of a gamble if hoping for odds to shorten after placing the back bet.
Any advice appreciated :)
+0@Tornado, if there is a short priced favourite (odds on), then hoping the odds on higher priced selections will shorten is a very risky as there will be much larger gaps between bookie and exchange odds in these races.
It’s just a matter of patience, when the situation is there, take it. Taking a loss on the win as long as the place arb pays out more.
Some do get backed in (one I had today went from 36.0 to 14.0 at one point) but there’s no real way of knowing unless you have trading experience and can identify the markers for a big price drop.
+0I have wiped out my exchange with this past few days, hit winner after winner absolutely crazy stuff…profitable but would prefer them just to place not turn over the odds on fav race after race!!
+0Chers for the reply Johnbo, I’ll take another look at some recommended races and see what I can find.
+0Hey, 19.20 Wolverhampton anyone got any idea why odds on Ibazz have dropped from 34.0 to 13.0 in about 30 mins on the exchange?!

Well, went off at 8.5 and placed 2nd by 3/4 length. Made a bit on this but still curious why did it drop so sharply? Anyone?
+0Well it opened 9-1 and touched 10-1 according to sportinglife, so think you were just looking at a lack of liquidity rather than a true price it was trading at.
+0It happens quite a lot though…
The people that know about that kind of thing decide Ibazz is walking with a spring in his/her step or something and stick a big wedge on it.+0I got an e/w bet on at 41.0! Couldn’t get a lot on but still… :-)
+0The 6.15 at Dundalk is a great bad ew race on paper. Always a big question mark over Irish liquidity though. Think I’ll just go in £25 ew on Diamond and Cocohulababy.
+0Cheers Chris… you have to love those second favourites!
(I had very little on the second favourite this time)Interestingly you could get hence at 1.5, when it was laying for 1.5/1.51 and the place was laying for 1.05…. That’s £2.75 for every hundred ew (laying on betfair).. Plus the chance of bog plus the potential commission saving..
+015.20 at Curragh..
(only 8 runners!)+0Yeah I looked at that one and also 5.15 Tramore. Both with no liquidity at the mo and having looked at the first few races at Curragh, not much appeared so I think its high risk for that reason.
Just saw your reply to me the other day and it highlights the point I was trying to make about going for outsiders. So your place arb on the second favourite was something like 1.5/1.2 ?
Mine was 5/3.45 on the horse that came in third which made me £72 on the underlay minus a £6 loss I had to suck up on the win part because of poor liquidity on Irish racing.
+0Magical is the horse to go for in the 3.20. Can get on him at 21 at Sky Bet.
