Bad EW Races NO CHAT

  • Right an idea I got from oddsmonkey, we post the daily bad EW races on here with no chat or discussion, plenty of topics for that. Think this thread will help us all in case you don’t think it will just skip this please ?

  • New to matched betting?

My Matched Betting Academy is the best place to get started. Learning the fundamentals takes 10-15 minutes and you’ll make £15 in the process.

15.50 at Tipperary (only has 8 runners)..

The 14.10 and 14.45, both at Tipperary, are probably worth watching too, although there are a lot of runners!

WoW…seems like there’s big money to be made on this Each Way malarky. If only i wasnt new to all this stuff i’d be happy to dip my toes in. Just starting with sign ups and Sky and Cora’l at the moment but hope to be doing more soon. Any advise/tips on betting on the horses so i know which sites to go to for the best offers/chances of winning big money lol ?

The 20.40 at kempton should be a good 1, coral, lads and Fred’s all doing 4 places

stevey, work your way up to bad e/w. Start with money back 2nd (sky and Betway are best for this) then MB2nd to favourite, have a dabble on 2 clear with William hill (only pick distance races with a heavily fancied favourite). By the time you have done all that you should have come accross the benefits and pitfalls of backing and laying horses. Now move onto extra place races and once you have some experience with that go to the beginning of this thread and read up on it. Good luck mate.

    Its straightforward enough Stevey.

An each way bet means that if your horse finished in the top 3 that you get a fixed fraction (1/5) of the payout. (Terms can change to top 2,3 or 4 and 1/4 or 1/5 odds usually).

So punters like it, its not a win all, lose all. You can get a consolation prize if your horse almost wins.

Bookies like it because the fraction generally works in their favour. For example I was looking at dogs last night. Typical dog race is 6 runners. If all is equal and odds are true then its 5/1 for each dog to win. Place terms on dogs is 1/5 for 2 places. So one fifth of 5 is 1 so you are getting 1/1 or evens to place. But the problem is all things being equal your dog is only 33% chance of finishing in the top 2 (2 chances out of 6). To be fair the terms really should be 1/5 for top 3. Your dog would be 50-50 to finish in top 3 out of 6 dogs. So evens there would be fair for top 3. But the bookie isn’t paying out on the third place dog so pocketing that for himself when it would be more fair to pay out to the customer. Means more profit for the bookie, and that’s all that bookies like – profit.

The advantage for the sharp punters starts when you have weird races where you can imagine that the 1/5 odds to place is a value bet. For example you have your favourite, he is good, he is going to win 80% of the time. Bookie might price him about 1/4. Then your second favourite is not as good but not bad, maybe he is 5/1. The rest are useless 100/1, 50/1 no hopers. In that case one fifth of 5/1 is evens again. But you can see from the make up of the race that the 5/1 horse is going to place 99% of the time. So you want that bet. This would be called a “bad” ew race – bad for the bookie.

There are lots of risks involved with non runners, place terms changing, rule 4’s etc. And its never as obvious as my contrived example above. And the bookies know all about bad ew races so they will fix their odds so that you will lose so much value on the win part that it will negate the value on the place. At the same time though they are under pressure to offer the best odds to attract customers and if alot of mug punters are betting on win only then their liability on the race might not be too bad and they can maintain top odds for longer, so opportunities certainly arise.

So as the others suggest get right into the simple offers. Get used to backing and laying horses.

Had Mandalayan @ 101.0 in that race – shame PP would only let me get £1.15 e/w…

Same Lewi. Only £0.3 at B365 but I didn’t lay the place side so thats a solid £6 profit

Never worth laying the place side of small bets

Enigma – you laid the win part of a 30p ew bet! That is dedication!

I’d backed Mandalayan in the place market, so that was good for me..

I almost managed a terrible mistake too, I didn’t notice the race was about to start and found a small arb on the place market of the second favourite, when the race started I had several hundred unmatched, fortunately it matched during the race. The second favourite didn’t place so I would have lost a lot! – Lucky boy!!

The value’s on the place side only, and its no less effort matching a 30p or £30 bet, but it does feel a bit pointless at times. The advantage is if the win lay drifts, I just let it slide for that massive 30p risk

The value is on the bet as a whole, the place part us what adds the value but you can’t place it in isolation
Laying very rarely does anything except detract from the value, especially in these races where the bad each way horses often have pretty steep premiums to get the lay matched

So would it be better long-term to not lay either side? But instead to only place bets when the lay odds are close? and then simply ride the variance

    betman 41

Yeah, but you have to be disciplined in ensuring the value is there, then realise there will be a lot of variance on this type thing.
If u read back through the post though you’ll see plenty examples of big winners coming in, and some streaks of that too.

This month I’ve been focusing on the 3rd/4th horses on the list, usually the ones around 9/1 and 15/1 mostly because i’ve been restricted at most bookies so can only win around £300 it seems. So today i had Red Miracle in the 2pm and The Flame in the 3.15.
i’ve been laying slightly more than a full underlay to cover the amount i lose on the win lay rather than going for guaranteed cash.

    haven’t made a penny this month…
