My theory beyond matched betting

  • Hi all have not posted in a while and have seen the forum collapse due to the lack of offers. My online career is all but over now due to being gubbed in the last week by my last few standing accounts. Anyway people will want to argue this but over the last month I turned a 4K bankroll into 21k by something called each way arbing.

The basic jist of this is to pick races with 8,9 16-20 runners and backing certain horses each way. It always works in fields of 16-20 runners where 4 are paid and works in the 8 or 9 especially when there are 2 or 3 outsiders or an odds on favourite.

For example I put 100 ew on a 12/1 shot on bet365 in a 17 runner race. I am looking to lay at 13 on betfair. Let the lay match and as soon as it has take the 12/1. Current position is your down a max of 5 pounds on bf commission. (Use smarkets if you wish)

Then go on the place markets and lay the horse. The odds on 365 are 3/1 (4) as a 1/4 of the odds. On betfair this should be lower and often trading around 3.3/3.4. This means you can play about with the numbers to make a profit but say i lay 120 @ 3.4 to lose 288 I can make around 12-14 on this part after commission. Therefore I’m around a tenner up before the race regardless of what happens.

As my bankroll got bigger I got better at it by doing multiple horses in races and laying the places 3 mins before the start of the race. people can say what they want about me being 17k up from it but I know I have made this money and the theory works if you are sharp at maths can react quickly to mental calculations and I know a few people on here would be able to do it.

Good luck to those who go for it. I will be spending some time at mates houses over the summer and taking a 50 50 cut for the use of their name.

  • New to matched betting?

My Matched Betting Academy is the best place to get started. Learning the fundamentals takes 10-15 minutes and you’ll make £15 in the process.

I agree beaser, I’m getting more and more disillusioned with oddsmonkey. to be honest I find it much easier to open up oddschecker in one tab, an exchange in another and my spreadsheet and just manually compare each horse. I’ve also noticed their software has slowed down a bit, where it used to be almost live, the odds now seem to be about 3 minutes out of date. that doesn’t seem like much, but its an eternity when you’re ten minutes from the off.
If I wasn’t paying the original price I think I’d drop oddsmonkey all together, especially now they are putting the price up again.

I have also been following this thread with interest. Because I work day times I struggle to maximise this opportunity, I don’t use any software either. I have hit some strong races with between 40-60 % arbs but these races come round once a week for me but probably more available in the day. I lost 365 which probably contributed to this but we will never know. I am now trying about 100 ew but split over 2 3 bookies just to keep me on the low a bit more. I don’t know what the max bet is but If I could use my whole float for 1 race then there is no reason why you could not make upto £500 on 1 race.Thats my opinion anyways.

If I remember correctly Beesty was making most of his profits from B365. He started off with fairly small bets but as his profits grew he increased then, and ended up making bets of several hundred pounds at a time. I think he said he was amazed he got away with it for as long as he did, I imagine he was probably very lucky. Most of us would have been restricted long before he was.

Like others have said, when I looked into it, if there was an arb on the place part, you were loosing on the win part. It was not that difficult to end up around B/E on your E/W bet, or a small profit or loss, but I didn’t come across huge arbs. I also found that you had to be extremely quick with your thoughts and actions.

By the time I had plugged in the numbers into my calculator to see if it was worth doing the odds would have changed. If you can do this stuff in your head (I cant) then that would be a big advantage.

I also seem to remember that Beesty was not laying off both bets at the same time. I think he would often have to wait until very close to the off to lay off with win part, this of course is not without risk, so not for the fain hearted.

@ Gman, can you provide some more info about this E/W dutching you mentioned in a previous post. I have seen it referred to on forums in that past but never really paid it much heed. Would it be possible to provide an example or a link to an example.

I have been rather lazy in my match betting so far and intend to put a lot more effort into it. I have been happy to average around £300 per month profit since I started in January, but I think I need to start stepping it up. I have started opening up more accounts but still have loads left to do, so perhaps this E/W ditching could be something I might be able to make use of.

I so agree with Beaser and others on here about the difficulty of making a useful profit using the each way matcher on Oddsmonkey and other devices. The market is efficient and when you divide the profit if there is one by the time taken surely you must be running at a loss.
Whilst I have the floor can I take a swipe at the Casino offers put out by the commercial products i.e. Oddsmonkey and other subscription services. I know they have to fill space and report offers from Bookmakers / Casinos but come on who in there right mind is going to put through £50 (to earn that £50 how many hours do you have to work to earn that £50 after tax?) on a slot maqchine to get a £5 bonus?
I treat this as a hobby so my the way I do it is as follows. I have accounts with PP, Ladbrokes, Sky , Coral, WH , Betfred. Why because I know they will pay out , no hassle.
As I say Im retired and it is a hobby. Some one said earlier , its the early bird that catches the worm. Im up at 6.a.m. cup of coffee, computer on , make a note of Racing Post favorites. Which of the above bookies has the best price off Oddsmatcher from my above bookies the major players, I then back it for a £100 win, lay it off on Betfair as they have the most liquidity. It is rare that one of the horses doesn`t win. If they all lose okay I will make a small loss on the day which is far outweighed when as yesterday for example it went very much in my favour.
I backed Glitter girl at 9/4 (3.25) for a £100 win and layed it at 3.90 for a potential loss of £19.82, so I am always in a negative state.
Glitter Girl won as you know but was returned at 9/2 F (5.5) giving me a massive profit on just that one race. The secret is the BOG prices , sometimes it is much less than this profit wise but do not expect to earn a living from betting because you won`t treat it like a hobby and enjoy the proceeds when things go right.
I withdraw money for small luxuries but I always have a betting bank entirely separate from my household money and look on it in the same way as if I had bought shares in a company, the company shares go up and down but the eventual idea is to make an overall profit.
Rotate your bets around the BOG bookmakers if possible nobody likes a winner all the time. Experiment with other markets like tennis outright competitions, Football Premiership outright, its a hobby when you start to depend on that winning fix its time to stop.

Interesting post navillus, my records aren’t detailed enough to work it out exactly, but I do know that quite a lot of my profits over the months have come from BOG. I think BOG is one of the few things that one can exploit for decent profit until the bookie gets fed up and gubbs you.

Yes agreed but keep moving the money around, they like a loser, and also be prepared to go into a shop as soon as it opens if you are gubbed , I have the time unlike a lot of people, also a forgotten thought (age) the big meetings are best for price movement.
Some time ago there was an Australian software programme that covered all the runners in a race making a few pounds here and there based on bog bookmakers, it worked but cost so much it would have taken you years to get your cost of programme back, I think it was called, “All by the book” using 8 runner races or less.

Right im going to give you all who still have b365 accounts huge profits…. the st leger tomorrow there are huge profits on 6 horses as i speak… small loss on the win big gains on the place arb… eg £100 ew on Ventura gets you £36.33 if it places or is unplaced… fact…. £100ew on ormito £26.67 fact
So gutted all my b365s are gubbed!!
I like to go for the big wins thou and break even if unplaced and bigger money if places…. swordfish would be ideal for this method…. 13/14 for win 4.0/3.2 place… with b365 i would standard lay the win and underlay the place on this.
Fill your boots lads this is the best race ever to buy money

Housesofparliament is 11.0/11.0 bet fair. Even with 1/5 of the odds place 3.0/2.28 still very good.

    Hi folks,

Currently on holiday in France but have noticed a few posts on this page. Good to see some people make some chunky profit today (gutted I can’t do too much but don’t mind some time off from it all)

One question is do I lay the place off at the same time. The answer is no. I have been using my phone to place the bets whilst having betfair win and place markets up on a double screened computer. I literally now do my shortlist in the morning and log in about 30 mins before the race. I then track horses that are a close match and will go for them as and when they turn up. The opportunities often happen in the last 7 mins before the race when all bookies seem to go centralised with the setting of their odds. You have to be quick but I literally get the win on when the chance arrives and lay it instantly. On my gubbed accounts they seem to let me win around £500 so if a horse is 5/1 I can get 100 ew on. I then track for other horses and the place markets before doing this 2 mins before the race unless the horse drifts then I look to go break even on that one. This is because some accounts do give me BOG and others don’t because of the gubbing. Ideally I am always looking to get on 2 horses at a min because if one places and one does not there is more profit in paying less commission.

Anyway where I am at is I gave my job up as a Maths teacher to do this full time knowing I need to make around 50 a day to get the wage I was on before. Currently, I am doing ok where profits can range from 100-500 a day depending on the schedule and the quality and volume of my bets. It’s not as good as the glory days before but enough to keep me going.

If it does go wrong then I always know with the current situation I can walk back into a teaching job if necessary. However, I am also onto some other projects that are a work in progress.

The trick is find races with 8/9 runners where there is an odds on favourite or a load of outsiders 33/1 + and you are in business. 16+ races will also deliver consistent profits. You also have to be patient and very quick for when opportunities arise. The key is getting as close a match as possible on the win market to keep losses down to a minimum in what I call the “first half”.

Anyway good luck there are usually 5-10 opportunities a day.

Thanks for sharing Beesty. Fair play being able to give up your job, I know is not be brave enough! I’m always impressed by people who are able to identify inefficiencies. I’m sure it requires a certain type of person and an analytical mind. I’d class myself as more of a “bottom feeder” picking up scraps!!! ?

Are you not restricted on accounts at all? All my accounts restricted me at the same time I got gubbed. Luckily my wife is getting into this….. ?

Massive thanks to Beesty, and everyone that has had the balls to have a go at this. This forum contains most thing you need to know on this once you have read through it a few times. I am looking at possible races today. Just seeing if I am on the right lines with my choices:
13:55 Ffos – 10 runners, 3 places at 1/5 odds. Three favouries, priced at 1.80, 3.50 and 5.0. Then the rest of field is 11, 17 x 2, 26 and 51 x 2. Not much liquidity in the back market atm but place markets work out even already.
15:15 Bath – 17 runners, 4 places at 1/4 odds Won’t list all prices but a few favourites, 8 horses with odds of 15 +. Vincentti is 10 on WH and the same to lay on Betfair. Back places odds at 3.25 and to lay place is 2.98. Def one to watch closer to the off.

My selections are from William Hill, the main one I’m gubbed from after hammering their accas last season.
