Betfair Each Way edge

  • So I just noticed this gizmo.

On betfair when you are placing an each way bet you can adjust the terms if you want.

For example I can bet on Top Tug in Catterick 14:20 today odds 3.25. Standard place terms are 1/5 odds, 3 places.

This is almost value as you’re getting odds 3.25/1.45 for the win/place(3) on the bookie and the lays are at 3.7/1.27 on the exchange.

    BUT

If I toggle the Each Way Edge widget to only pay two places then this will increase the odds to 4.33! Giving 4.33/1.67 for the win/place(2), where the lays are 3.7/1.59 (2 to place). Which is better value.

Maybe its something someone wants to look into, but at least at first glance on this example looks like you can stretch the value you get e/w arbing by using the edge.

    Anyone use this feature regularly?

What price you laid the 17.0 shot?

    Chris 24

Layed it at 14.5, £40 ew stake.

Betfair were best priced at 17.0, I only go for horses where Betfair are top price according to oddschecker. That, together with the fact that this race is 1/4 odds for first three places means it was an easy arb.

Yeah that’s what i’m saying. Most of the value is coming from the arb rather than the edge.

Ok well I found it and took it, opportunistic I guess but thats how I play it. I look for the best prices that Betfair offer and go in, I dont really calculate value etc.

    Plenty covered now:

Betfair second place: Lightoller, Legendoire and Harlequin Rose

Paddy fourth place: Legendoire and Zambezi Queen

Also had Stopdworldnletmeof at Sky but he just got withdrawn.

I bet nothing comes in now :P

    Yeah good spot!
One good thing less runners gives you more chance of hitting.
Looks like you’re well stocked up, good luck.

What was your actual bet though and how did you lay it?

I made a couple of quid on it doing basic ew arbing.

    £20ew at 12/12 and 3.2/2.5 for the 4 places.

Where am I losing so much value?

Take your point Fog-Blog (page 14) re the fact my calcs for 2nd place are perhaps a little too generous.

I want to carry on using the bookie industry formula for places since I guess that has been tried and tested over the years and whilst not always perfect as we all know, to our benefit, generally speaking I guess it works. What I will do however is tweak the adjustment so that it further reduces the implied odds of the horse getting 2nd place and thus reducing the EV.

I also take your point re going for larger amounts as opposed to the small £0.30/0.40p’s that I have been managing along with the odd 2nd place from time to time.

That said I would like to think I can carry on with ‘my methodology’ and lets see how I do – I fully expect a winning horse from time to time which will cut back my profits but overall this should continue to prove profitable which ever methodology we use.

The 18.50 and 19.25 races at Downpatrick could be good but risky as liquidity tends not to show up until 5-10 minutes before the Irish races.
